Frequently Asked Questions

What is DNA testing? Do I need it? Do I want it? Will it hurt? Is it expensive? What will I find out? Is it dangerous?

Whoa! Slow down there, pardner. Let’s address these questions one at a time. DNA testing, or genetic testing, refers to analyzing a sample of DNA to find something out.

What do you mean “something”? That sounds kind of vague.

Right. That’s because there are a number of questions that DNA testing can answer. Take a look at our Services page to see the different kinds of issues that are being addressed by genetic testing.

What do the terms “genetic testing,” “genomic testing,” and “DNA testing” mean? Are they all different?

“Genetic” usually refers to a small number of genetic markers, and “genomic” usually refers to a large number of markers (or an entire genome). “DNA testing” includes both of the above.

Why do I need genetic testing?

If your doctor advises or orders a DNA test, you probably need the test. Otherwise, it’s something you can choose to get (or not). It all depends on what you want to find out, and how much you can afford.

Are genetic tests expensive?

They can be.  The tests offered by the providers we list range in price from free to tens of thousands of dollars.

Is genetic testing painful?

Generally, no. Most providers require just a cheek swab or some spit.

Is it dangerous?

Not dangerous, per se, but you may find out things about yourself (or others) that could affect your life profoundly.

What about DNA testing for animals, such as pets?

DNA Test Index focuses on human genetic testing. There are plenty of resources on the Web about testing for animals. Here, let me Google that for you.

How can I find out more?
The US government has an excellent website called Genetics Home Reference, which includes a Handbook that provides information on the “benefits, costs, risks, and limitations of genetic testing.”

Another great government website is Genetics and Genomics for Patients and the Public, which contains the informative Frequently Asked Questions About Genetic Testing.

We recommend these resources very highly.
