DNA testing for adoption

A Quick Summary

There are multiple reasons why DNA testing is used in the adoption process, and by adoptees:

  • DNA testing is sometimes a legally mandated part of the adoption process. In international adoptions, testing is often done to help reduce child abductions. Even if not legally required, the parties involved may get peace of mind by confirming family relationships.
  • Adoptees often have very little information about their birth parents, including their ethnicity.  In this case DNA testing for ethnicity could be useful.
  • Adoptees in search of the their birth families can upload the results of their DNA tests to one or more reunion registries. Typically, exact matches are reported immediately.
  • Adoptees in search of their birth families can use DNA testing to confirm or refute a suspected relationship. In this case, DNA relationship testing could be useful.
